Wisdom, humor, a healthy sense of adventure and warmth made Moomins everyone's favorites. Moomins were created by the Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson - they are fairy tale creatures with large snouts. Tove Jansson's book about Moomintroll family was translated into 40 languages. The books were published within a period from 1945 to 1993.

The Moomin Museum is located in Tampere, Finland. The museum's amazing collection comprises more than two million works, including multimedia projects. Jansson's books about this funny Moomin family fascinate both children and adults. The original illustrations from the books are the integral part of the museum. The exhibition includes unique works, which were never exhibited before -  some are very fragile, so they are placed in a dark room and protected from bright light.

The real jewel of the collection is a blue five-story Moomin house, which is 2.5 meters tall. It was built by the artists Tuulikki Pietilä, Pentti Eistola and Tove Jansson at the end of the 1970s. The original idea was to make it round, as Jansson sketched it, however the authors of this project had different opinions about how the house should look like. The windows in the Moomin house resemble the ones in the homes of France, Russia, Karelia and Finland. Jansson herself created wallpaper for the rooms and covered the furniture in the cabinwith red velvet. During the construction of the house various types of wood such as pine, spruce, teak, pear were used. It took nearly 7000 chips of aspen to create the roof. There is the famous wine cellar in the basement, where Moominmamma keeps her jam, and there is a hidden treasure in the other part of the house.

When the house was ready, the authors went with it on a world tour, and in 1986 the house got its permanent residence in the museum. In 2012, the Moomin Museum moved to Tampere Art Museum.

Once you walk into the museum, you immediately feel transferred to the land of the Moomin. Th central hall showcases dolls and decorations recreating the scenes from the books - the sad and weary magician on the side of the crater; Moomintroll and his friends going to a big party, encountering scary cliffs, bottomless pits and huge waterfallson their way; Sniff looking at the stars through a telescope,of which he is very proud; a huge Christmas tree with beautifully decorated small gifts and the whole family around it celebrating the holidays.

In the museum you can also see a show on the beautifully designed stage, sit on a comfortable couch, read a book or visit the museum shop with lots of toys, books and souvenirs, which will make it impossible for you to leave the museum empty-handed.
